The Challenge: A global leader in apparel and footwear, our client maintained a diverse, international portfolio of leading lifestyle brands. In order to sustain the current growth trajectory, our client named the following key strategic priorities: leading in innovation, connecting with customers, expanding geographically, and growing direct-to-consumer.
Innovation was highlighted as a particularly important initiative, as the company’s historic success relied on its expertise in marrying aesthetically-pleasing design with excellent technical craftsmanship. Future product wins relied on continued innovation. Thus, the company set out to establish an Global Innovation Center where a dedicated team of both creative and technical experts would lead this strategic initiative. In developing this team, our client needed a strong executive leader to design, architect, and execute a consistent pipeline of commercial opportunities from innovation leads. The role was specifically responsible for the innovation in the company’s denim division, involving multiple brands, and thus required an effective executive to network and partner throughout the organization.
The Outcome: Understanding the importance of both technical expertise and customer-centric creativity, Herbert Mines Associates recruited a proven innovation leader out of the personal care industry. After earning a PhD from a leading university, the placement had an extensive career in personal care R&D and product innovation, rising through the ranks at several global companies. In more recent roles, the executive built the innovation function for globally-positioned businesses by hiring the right talent, creating the processes needed for a consistent innovation pipeline, and developing internal and external networks to guarantee success.
