Hal Reiter occupies a top spot on the Rolodex of retailers and fashion companies seeking the cream of the crop for chief leadership positions.
The high-end headhunter and executive-search-firm star was recently credited with placing the much-sought-after Vanessa Castagna, former chairman and CEO of J.C. Penney stores, catalog and Internet at private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management. In her new role, Castagna also holds the post of executive chairperson of Mervyn's, the promotional department store chain purchased last year by the cash-rich Cerberus. The resourceful Reiter may have killed two birds with one stone, as Castagna is now working with him to recruit a new CEO for the retailer.
Reiter's brand of recruitment tends to lead him outside the retail world for leadership material. Key examples: KFC's Mark Cosby, who Reiter placed at Sears, and Disney's Paul Pressley, who took over for Mickey Drexler at The Gap.
Power prediction: Reiter rounds out Mervyn's executive management team with a headline-grabbing CEO.
